I've been wanting to do a trip to an island that works out to about 18km in each direction when measuring on Google maps, which is stretches of straight lines. So will probably be 25km or more IRL.
Previously I thought I was comfortable traveling at around 7-8kph with the 2hp outboard, so thinking that'll be about 3 hours in each direction.

I was going to do this trip 2 weeks ago, but eventually decided against it because, well... I just couldn't get my speed up much past 5kph on recent trips, which then makes it 4-5 hours in each direction, not leaving much time for fishing. I mean the motor is not even at 1/2 throttle at that speed, but I just don't feel comfortable with the amount of stress on the kayak and my DIY skills with the motor mount.

Well, I discovered the problem on my last trip when I noticed Kts next to the speed and not kph :)

Anyway, I bought this then-3-month old Helix 7 from someone on this forum, but I'm afraid it's given me nothing but trouble. Apart from changing the units of measure by itself, it also has a tendency of lying to me!! On Thursday last week, for example, the water temperature in Orere Point varied from 14 to 28 degrees Celsius :)
Trev from YakAttack had a look at it and basically just confirmed that there was nothing wrong with how I'd mounted the transducer and that the temperature was in fact screwed up.

Also, apart from the usual sonar view, I've not managed to gain anything from any of the other views (side imaging etc) that the Helix 7 offers. Not sure whether that's a further issue with the FF or me just not understanding what to expect.

Does anybody in Auckland have a Helix 7 that can maybe take my FF out for a spin on their transducer to confirm that the FF is working fine. If that's the case, then I can just order a new transducer.

unfortunately its been my experience that second hand fishfinders (regardless of how new they are) are more trouble than they are worth. never again will i buy a second hand ff. or put any value more than 0 on one. it may cost more to buy new but the piece of mind is well worth it

Given it's age regardless of new or second hand I'd be getting in touch with BLA in Glenfield and asking them to give the unit the once over, tell them it's losing settings etc and they'll give it a full check over for you and I'd be very very surprised if they'd charge you for that...

Just a thought...

Is there a setting menu where you specify the type of transducer? If the speed display settings have changed, the transducer settings could have changed too.

I had problem with my Lowrance FF showing tropical temperatures in Tasman Bay in winter. It turned out I didn't have the correct transducer selected from the menu.

X 2 for taking it to BLA... If I recall correctly the tech there is called Johnny and he is awesome... there's nothing he doesn't seem to know or be able to sort out for you

Thanks chaps,

Unfortunately I bought it around the time that my wife and I separated, so it took the backseat in terms of priority and it's now a good few months later.

Nonetheless, sounds like BLA is my best bet, so I'll get hold of them.

MikeAqua, I didn't find anything online about setting the transducer type, but I'll go through the menu when next I'm close to the kayak/FF.

No, but I heard that phrase going through my head multiple times over the last few months as I've read it on here quite often! And rechecked the FF each time the thought crossed my mind :)
