Now the weather is warming up (along with the associated boat traffic up here), I thought some might be interested in what I call the "Route 101's" in the Bay - ie the primary traffic routes for Gas Gliders.
Note the two primary sunstrike locations on major routes (Kerikeri Inlet and Tapeka Point), be particularly vigilant if paddling at sunrise or sunset...

I remember those spots well from my sailing days growing up. I really must come up with the Kayak and revisit the Bay.

Yeah, what Pete warns against is serious.

I've nearly been mown down in my 12ft clinker dinghy by Tapeka at sunset.

And again, several times, by clowns who just aren't keeping a watch, on days when friends had spotted me from 2km away. In the BoI in summertime, we have more than our share of drunken - and also totally incompetent - boat drivers.

But note: kayak fishing in close to the shore is often more productive than out where the stinkboats go, anyway.

Too true, several times I've heard boaties complaining/warning over the VHF about yakkers in sunstrike around Tapeka.
Usually rental yaks from Paihia I suspect...
