From District Council |(

Due to the recent heavy rainfalls our sewage system experienced an overflow and extreme bypass (partially treated effluent) event into the Hatea River and as a result the Medical Officer of Health has advised as follows:

Key Messages
1. Swimmers and people with recreational contact with sewage contaminated sea or river water
· The usual advice for swimmers in upper harbour sewage spills is to stay out of the water for 5 days from the time that the sewage spill ceases or until water tests show that it is safe to swim.

· People involved in activities that are likely to involve head immersion such as kayaking and dingy sailing should follow the same advice as for swimmers.

· People who have contact with sewage-contaminated water should always thoroughly wash and dry their hands with soap and water afterwards. Open cuts or sores should be kept clean and covered with waterproof sticking plasters. If a cut develops redness, swelling, or infection seek immediate medical attention.

2. Shellfish gatherers
· Do not collect shellfish likely to be contaminated with human sewage for at least 28 days from the time of contamination.

3. Consumers of fish
· It is best not to catch and/or eat fish caught in the upper harbour because of the health risks for 5 days from the time the sewage spill ceases.

Risk Communication Assessment

Audience (people directly affected)
· People who swim or have contact with water in the lower Hatea River and upper Whangarei harbour (upstream of Onerahi)

· People who boat in the upper Whangarei harbour

· People who collect shellfish from Whangarei harbour (upstream of Onerahi)

· People who catch fish in the upper harbour

· People living on boats in marinas in the town basin and upper Whangarei harbour

· Iwi and Hapu with cultural connections with Whangarei harbour

:( Good advisory
Unfortunately the runoff problems are pretty widespread all around the country and the Manukau & Firth of Thames /Hauraki Gulf suffer after periods of prolonged heavy rain also .
Certainly not "finger licking good" even to paddle in let alone eat the Kaimoana.
Actual fact a guy from work is off with stomach complaints and I recall him mentioning taking the kayak for a spin the other day round his Waiuku beach.

Yep, the casual disregard of local govt for the quality of our coastal waterways is rapidly eroding our natural asset base, and therefore making our country poorer, however much milk powder we export.
