Cavallis are just out from Matauri Bay, 30min drive north from Kerikeri.

The waters abound with much meat 8)

There's a campsite right on the beach http://www.matauribay.co.nz/camp.html Brian's a good bloke too.

For any southerners planning on heading up, it's about a 20 - 30min crossing over to Motukawanui, then you can hug the coast to your hearts content. Coastline similar to Toots/Maitai Bay with lots of rocky wash, oodles of reef and many pins to flick tempting morsels around....And then there's Taheke

Numerous wee beaches to pop ashore if you need a break too.

If nobody else is keen, when are you allowed out next HLD? Im keen as to go around and get towed by an xl king.

Id much rather go here than back to matia..

It will be an all day mission for me, take some food an maybe a little gas cooker. I might even take a sleeping bag if its going to be nice...

Very keen at some stage soon, just not sure when. Does anyone know if the stories of dodgy locals are true (eg getting stuff nicked or getting hassled for "koha" $ etc). Have heard several stories of people who won't go back there.

Just do what I do mate an stick a Ngapuhi sticker on ya car. I got a spare maori flag just in case. I'll go down to taipa an steal a few foreshore n sea bed protest signs but ya might wanna bring some shoe polish just encase ;)

The sticker worked well for me when I used to surf out at shipwreck, my mates cars either side of mine got broken into an my one got left alone...racist's lol.

 They are a cunning bunch of locals there too aye - a few years ago we were in our launch anchored up at the cavallis for the night and a local over-laden fizz boat paddled up to us. They said they had broken down and needed a tow back in, which we did (of course) - as soon as we got near the shore they gave us a wave and started up their outboard and sped back to shore. Great way to save $, go find the dumbest looking pakeha to give them a tow

mmm looks like I wont be able to go out there in the yak for a few weeks...got some good mates coming up from waiheke and I've promised to take em out for BN & Bass, then jigging the cavalli islands etc. This will happen in the next fine weekend.

Im still very keen to paddle the islands, might be a bit closer to Xmas.
