So I'm staying at cape Karikari for few weeks over summer. Kayaking is no-go for medical reasons.

Are there any decent snorkelling spots accessible from land?

I'm aware oft he recently declared rahui and will avoid that area.

The rahui in the two bays (and out to the pin) is only for take.
Swimming etc okay.

And anywhere along that coast is good viewing through a looking glass.

Was hoping to find few bugs or scollies somewhere within swimming distance of shore, outside the rah.

Take the Fig Tree track over the headland, nice little bay on the other side. Should find some of what you seek...

(I see the DOC website has it listed as closed, likely due to some wee slips nibbling away at the edge of the path, grapefruit-sized rubble falling out of the bank onto the path or suchlike. Webland reports indicate that despite the "track closed" signs, no issues were found by intrepid types. Depends what you're used to/expecting I s'pose ;) )

Shame kayaking is out.

Scallops are almost impossable to find up here but you may be able to find a cray or two, with matai bay being out your best bet might be taking a drive up to henderson bay or Rarawa and trying the reef structure around there - both can be shore dives or try around cable bay/ coopers beach area - not as clean but plenty of reef to poke around....

I found some scollies off Poheke Beach. I was walking along it and I noticed quite few scallop shells in one spot. Water was crystal clear so I came back the next day with snorkelling gear.

The bach we rented at Tokerua came with couple of el-cheapo fishing kayaks. I took one for a play in the shallows with mate for help if needed and I couldn't re-enter re-entry was a no go. If I fell out in deep water I wouldn't have been able to get back in so I didn't go kayaking.

I'll see how I am after couple more weeks of recovery and some light exercise.
