What's the story? I occasionally see trip reports from the harbour and the odd decent fish caught. I don't find that particular piece of water very inspiring, preferring the deep blue. Any comments?

Don't do to many trip reports I'm lazy
but if your looking for a feed the harbour is a good place to go . I'm a bit like you tho and prefer fishing the coast
but in saying that I have had great fun catching good fish on light line in the harbour over the last few months

cheers GR. perhaps a little "auckland-style" soft baiting might be the order of the day. are there reasonable numbers of fish in the harbour all year?

No you have about a month left till they start to move out give or take depending on temps etc... Don't underestimate the harbor, does get some good fish and the shallows fishing in around mangroves etc can be awesome at times. That said I only fish the harbor in the mornings before work to be able to get out a bit more than I can if i dont.
Fishing is like a box of chocolates. you never know what is going to be served up...
