I'm off to Ohiwa for the first time tomorrow. I'm a dedicated softbaiter - is this going to work in the harbour or do I need to change my approach?
Kingfish in the harbour? Too shallow for jigging?
Any advice appreciated.

Generally in my opinion, jigging in this harbour has limitations. It is reasonably shallow and to be anywhere with any depth usually means the current is quite quick. I do a reasonable amount of landbased fishing there and we find casting any more than 50m or so your sinker will roll/drag. Now fortunately for the yakkers where the current is quite subdued (anywhere from 10-30m from the shoreline) is where the hoodlums like to hang out. Trolling 20-30cm kahawai livies would be worth a crack.
