A few people have expressed an interest in doing an "Around Rangitoto" paddle. I'm happy to lead everyone around.

To go around Rangitoto totally on the water you also need to go around Motutapu.
Here is a trip report to give you an idea what it will be like. http://www.kayakfishingnz.com/forum/vie ... =8&t=12427
So a bit of a sightseeing trip with enough fishing to give us a chance to catch a feed. The whole trip will take about 10 hours.
I also added a loop around Rakino which we can decide to do on the day if we all want to.
Track130514.JPG
You will need.....
  • To be paddle fit. You will be paddling for 8 hours at about 5-6kph.
  • Carry enough food and drink to let you paddle for 8 hours.
  • Clothing / sunscreen etc so you don't get burnt.
  • Have normal safety gear including a VHF to communicate to the others.
  • Comfortable enough not to need to stop multiple times along the way. We could however plan to stop 1/2 way somewhere for a short break & lunch.
  • Fishing gear if required.
  • To be responsible for yourself totally.
Please reply if you are interested. I'm assuming most people will want this to be on say a Saturday.
When I see a weather window that will work with the tides in the right direction I will let everyone know. This weekend may be OK weather wise but the tides are the complete opposite of what you need.

Totally up to you if you have a VHF. I would recommend one for a big trip.
With a few of us going you could stay within yelling range of someone who does.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that each person going is responsible for their own safety.

I would really like to do a tour like this. But with what I think is nerve damage in my arm I wont be physically up for it( even a few hours out there makes it worse ) ;( :$ I am looking at a possible replacement like a Stealth/Pinnacle ( more easily paddled) or even a Hobie Revo13...( $$$ are an issue) Good luck , I'm lookig forward to the pics .

No I didn't get any takers. I was only going to go if there were at least 2 others.
I will update this post when the weather looks good again.

Hey Destin, depending on timing, would you be opposed to a hobie tandem island tagging along on this trip?

Hey Destin, it's been a long while since I've been on here or out in my kayak, but am going to get back into it. Great to see you've kept up your amazing trip reports - great reading through those again. As soon as I get fit again, I'd be keen for a big paddle. I moved from Murray's Bay (where I used to c-tug down to the beach) to Central Auckland a year ago and lost the rhythm of heading out. I'm going to get a trailer to help this along and will likely be launching from around Kohi, so might see you out there. Just getting my gear sorted again this week.

Okay will do. I'm getting myself sorted this week and will look to head out the following week. I'll flick you a message when I've decided on a day to head out. What rig(s) are you now using? Still z-mans? I see in your TR you've replaced the slow jig with a rapala or equivalent?

No I haven't changed anything. Still Z-Man softbait and a Lucanus on the slowjig.

Does the slow jig hook up much? I've not had any success, though I'm told I need to get it down in the sand more.

Most days I get a hit on the slowjig but I would say I catch maybe 1 on the slowjig for every 6 on the softbait.
