Makara yesterday

So who was out at Makara yesterday? I ran into about three of you but didn't think to ask your names.

It was my first trip in my new boat, and all I managed was one blue cod and a kahawai. The barracuda were out in force though - I landed one after having to cut off my rig to escape some rocks when I had a fish on, so I was caught between retying a second rig in two casts, or taking the hook out. I ended up rather timidly using my hook remover at arms length.

The swell and breeze were getting up a bit at 1400, and it looked like a front was coming in, so I scarpered out of there.

Yep I was probably one of those, was that you in the Reload going out as I was coming in? Brief chat about the sea getting messy. Came home with a nice feed of BCs and a potential fish pie aka Kahawai. Had some good tussles with whatever they were but pulled the hook.

Yep. That was me.

There were plenty of small cod out at the first point, but given the conditions I wasn't keen to head out further to find anything bigger.

have been thinking of going out that way, obviously on a calmer day, what is the fishing like out that way?
An do you have far to go to get a decent feed.
Don't mind doing a bit of snorkeling as well.

Fishing isn't too bad. I haven't had to paddle any more than 3 - 4 kms. There are diving options too.
