Welcome to the addiction :D Please don't forget to factor in your PFD into your budget. Appropriate clothing for colder months can be aquired along the way, but a correct for purpose and well fitted PFD could be your best purchase, ;) Some would add a VHF radio to that as well.(along with the certification to use it)
Paddle upgrade and Sharkskin type clothing make the whole experience much more enjoyable but basic thermal type leggings, rash shirt and light weight rain wear will get you out amongst it. :)
There are clubs based at the North Shore and out East Auck. , worth getting onboard with to have a bit of peace of mind when starting out.
Enjoy.
