My softbait reel needs replacing and I'm thinking about a small Shimano baitrunner. I've always fancied one of these and I occasionally strayline using my softbait gear.

Would it work OK for both uses?

Thanks

JR

I have a 2500 and love it.
They have more than enough spool size, drag etc to handle some good fish.

Only thing I'll add though is that there are a lot more moving parts and openings for salt to get in

I also have a 4000D. Great little versatile reel for soft baiting, straylining, casting small lures ...

I don't use mine on the yak for the reasons Waikato Yakka mentioned.

But I'm sure if you do little proactive maintenance it will be OK.

Alan Tani has a step by step tear down tutorial on the 4000D reel.

Alan is a genius ... these days one of my criteria for choosing a reel is whether hehas posted a service tutorial for it.

I have one of those smaller bait runners that I use on the kayak I think that's the D series? I get confused by the bait runner numbering.

No problems so far. This range have a sealed drag system, whereas some of the original, larger baitrunner models do not and struggle with kayak conditions.
