I currently use a trip on the traditional 700g kayak anchor.

Considering getting a grapnel for reef and rock bottoms.

Grapnels have always worked great on boats I've grown up around because you could always use the power of the boat to bend the tines and release them.

How effective are grapnels on kayaks? Reviews, experiences and preferences are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Speaking as one, who has lost two small grapnels, by having to cut the anchor rope, I'd suggest, that if you were wanting to be able, to bend the tines, from a Kayak, that a grapnel fashioned from a good old fashioned coat hanger might be the ticket.

With a little chain attached to give it weight and bottom time.

Just wondering what's wrong with a folding anchor and trip as you describe. You can make the trip as heavy/light as you like, so it covers most bases.

I used to use a folder with trip pre softbait days, the occasional hassle of a premature trip was easily rectified with another bubble tie (like cable ties only much weaker).
Grapnels were 1/8"(?) rod with a length of galv waterpipe as shaft, but I don't have big current to worry about here. bit of a pain to carry on board though.

Now I just use a drogue if I ever need to stay roughly in one spot.
