A mate gave me some old jig heads so I tried my hand at tying some Skutes, anyone else given it a go much?

I tried tying it in a "clouser" style more akin to something found in salt water fly fishing. These are used to target Kahawai, Snapper, Gurnard and Trevally, depending how you fish them. Although the jig head will probably make the fly a bit heavy for targeting Trevally.

Beautiful! Looks pretty deadly. A lot bulkier than mine, perhaps I need to flesh it out a bit next time.

Also, is that colour scheme French, American or Dutch?

Well I took the Skute out for a crack on Saturday morning from Narrowneck beach. The plan was to flick the skute around on my softbait rod and have an orange slider hanging below.

The fishing was pretty quiet for me that day (not sure if it's because the skute wasn't working or the fish weren't around) Fortunately I did get some action on the skute, although it was a bit frustrating.

I briefly hooked into what felt like a nice snapper on the drop, it pulled a bit of line before the line went slack and it had got off!

Then I was trolling the skute behind me while shifting spot and hooked up on what was most likely a kahawai, but that got off too..

Finally I picked up a Gurnard on my skute, just letting it drag along the bottom. First gurnard I've caught in a while so I was stoked with that.

So the Skute worked, but not the feeding frenzy I had hoped for.. I've got some zonker strips coming in the mail, and some maribou so looking forward to tying up some more.

I did pick up a pan snapper on the slider also.

Cheers

Caught a rat king while trolling this skute on Monday. Just need a Kahawai and a Snapper on it now!

Another fish to the species list on this same Skute. (nearly two) - I'm loving this lure, can't wait to make some more.

Awesome fun catching snapper on it in the kelp, hooked up on a John Dori as well but the hook pulled near the surface!

Pretty cool man. I just did a trip up north with some mates, one of whom caught his PB on the Saturday morning, then topped that on the Sunday morning both on Skutes he'd tied himself. He was kind enough to tie one for me a few months back but I lost it after 3 casts haha.

Looking forward to seeing how this develops!
