Comments: Personal best gurnard, one of my favourite eating species and was the target species for the day. Grabbed my line just as I was about to call it a day. Thank god for last casts ;)

I had another one similar size a month earlier on the opposite coast. Didn't think to weigh or measure it and the photo of the first one is from a weird angle. Both times I thought I'd snagged up until the 'snag' started pulsing. Both on soft bait after the sun hit the horizon. From what I've read (and a bit of first hand experience now), spring is when the big beasts are most ravenous. Good target species while waiting for warmer water fish (snapper and kingi) to get down to Wellington..
