While on the safety acquisitions , I saw this on Trade Me recently and as I had made up my own similar set up with a Tektite beacon I knew they were good gear so got this for not much more than the bare LED beacon .$75.00
It comes in it's own bag come flag and has a folding tent pole elasticised type carbon fibre mast that it stows in.

As you can see it stows brilliantly can fit in recessed rod holder or deck one ,& also has a Scotty on mine ,(Canon fittings available ) bayonet connection to go to base direct.
The 3 AA batteries came with it are good for 100 hrs and NiMH rechargeable batteries I already use for other handheld electronics are twice as good as standard AA's.
The rear deck mounting position is preferable so you don't lose night vision and from using my home made version a lower angle on the light so it dosn't impede your forward vision .
They can and do attract fish attention also and I've had good sized Mullet pound into me paddling along in the dark.
These are fully waterproof dive torch beacons to 100' so nothing to stop you poking it underwater for a fish Disco attraction device.

I've got two of these and they pretty damn good (the light that is)....

A quick look on TM and heres the one that PS got....note that it says a 2 mile range

http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/kayaks- ... 383209.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Now....heres the website for the manufacturer in the US....I've looked and cant see a range specified...

http://www.tek-tite.com/src/product_info.php?id=3095" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But in saying all that, they seem to work real well and are very visible !!

I saw an online video from the manufacturers of these and they specified a range of 2 nautical miles, approved for use by U.S Coastguard

Yeah -lost the good instructions that come with it :$
But did notice my original diving one is 4 LED & good for 10 km. and this one looks to be 2 LED so not as bright.
The reflective tape works well (camera flash)as per pic, which the other one I've got dosn't have.
