Re: VHF Recommendations

Thanks for the help guys. At the moment I am looking at this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/894955686" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as a starter. How good are you at always putting something on charge before you need to use it? I ask as Nickel Metal Hydride batteries, even ...

Re: Tell me about your paddling pants (If they have a fly)

External adhesive condom catheters are a good solution. I use them diving if I'm wearing a dry suit. Haven't needend to use one on the yak yet. But when I am heading out for really long trips probably will. Just roll it on at home, plug in a flexible hose which you can route wherever. No need to ai...

Re: Kayaker rescued - worthwhile read

It's a good read and again it shows that when things go wrong it's almost always a series of things going wrong. A single catastrophic event is very rare. I like to think of an effing great big hole in the ground, a pit if you like. An incident pit. Whenever you head out you can choose to be 2-3 ste...

Re: Wellington Winter Wear

Hi That's my dilemma If you have a gasket sealed pant on, How do you get the bootie on and the seal over the bootie? I can see how waterproof socks would work with a shoe or sandal to protect it But I cannot get my head round how a bootie/gasket setup works You would just wear the boot over the ank...

Re: Wellington Winter Wear

I am going to see how an old diving drysuit I have goes this winter. It shouldn't be too constrictive as I will only wear a thin thermal layer under it, but it will be very warm (even warmer if I use my heated vest and heated gloves) ;) . I'll try it out and see if paddling produces too much sweat f...

Re: are there any auto electricians amongest us

I'm not an auto sparky but... Firstly your concern about the batteries being 12A. The batteries being 12A is the capacity of the battery not the amperage that they discharge at. A 12V battery with a 12Ahr capacity will give 12V @ 1A for 12 hrs or 12V @ 2A for 6 Hrs etc.. Now with the actual draw, it...

Re: Wheeleez question

Alibaba is a huge publicly listed company like eBay/Paypal (but much bigger) rolled into one. They hold the funds in escrow until you receive your goods. Once you receive the stuff and acknowledge it is OK and what you ordered the seller gets paid. Alibaba also have a more retail oriented arm calle...

FOM you've inspired me to look at mounting my underwater scooter onto the yak. http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/cc351/plumb_bob/Mobile%20Uploads/image.jpg It weighs approx 45 kilos but is neutral in the water. If I mount it so that its throttle (the upright bit above the cowling at the rear) is ju...

I have an iCom purchased from The GPS store. Works great, much cheaper than here (half the price even after shipping) and they were fantastic to deal with.

They might not have a unified approach to dealing with claims so differences in experience may just be different staff members with differing experience levels and consumer law awareness.

Re: Uniden vhf warranty a load of crap ! Beware!

Absolutely Kippy, less than straight up retailers prey on uniformed customers with respect to honouring faulty goods claims. Thankfully there are many who understand that post sales experience is often far more important than pre sale. I would email them with those clauses highlighted and quote thei...

Re: Uniden vhf warranty a load of crap ! Beware!

The marketing blurb also claims it to be "perfect for kayakers". That is an extraordinary claim that you will be able to leverage. Check out clause h and i in particular. "7Meaning of acceptable quality (1)For the purposes of section 6, goods are of acceptable quality if they are asâ€...

Re: Uniden vhf warranty a load of crap ! Beware!

The consumer guarantees act may offer you some traction. Basically the warranties the manufacturers supply are subservient to the CGA. The item must be fit for purpose, all special requirements for maintenance must be explained clearly and it must last a reasonable period. Have a search for it. It's...

Re: Elite 7 - I want to cry :(

That really is a crappy way to treat customers. I have a business servicing dive computers for a manufacturer in Canada and they don't care where the customer has purchased from or even if they are the original owner. They "own" their product and all issues are to be addressed fairly, I ha...

Re: Elite 7 - I want to cry :(

That sucks! Doesn't look like stone damage to me. Point load or torsion of the case seems more likely. I hear enquiring with Lowrance gets a refusal to fix and just an offer of purchasing a refurbished unit. How handy are you? If you can establish that the broken part is just the display faceplate a...
