It is the rod that does the work. As long as your chosen reel has a smooth drag and can hold the appropriate amount of line, it does not matter.

Damn! I just gave away an old draw knife to hang on a wall for a display.I could've used that ( when my elbow is fixed) . I was priviledged enough to use a Sawyer sea Feather V-Lam onetime, beautiful . I would have one of my own if but for a Lotto win that hasn't happened yet, :)
