Sullivans Bay 09/06/18

Beautiful morning at Sullivans Bay on Saturday. Although I guess everywhere was good with weather like we had. First four casts resulted in 4 snapper, although only one of them was big enough to put in the bin at 32cm. Managed another 2 within the next 30 mins going approx 40cm and 50cm. Then the sl...

Re: Anyone been out lately

went out yesterday off NN around 9am, had less than 100m visibility in the fog which burnt off in the next 30mins, went into the channel, the tide just started to come in, basically just sat in one spot breeze against slow tide flow, didnt see any other paddlers. Went between no7 and yellow bouy, n...

Re: Landing big fish - what do you use and why?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments.

I think a small gaff is the way to go for me. Not too worried about losing a small fish so I'll continue to use the jighead and then buy/make a gaff for anything larger.

Landing big fish - what do you use and why?

Team, A while back I lost my berkley landing net at Army Bay. I had it when I set off, and it was gone some time later. No idea how it went overboard. Didn't see it, feel it or hear it enter its watery grave. Not a great loss though so I wasn't too worried. I haven't bothered replacing it as I've ju...

Sullivans Bay 15/04/18

Andrew and I got to Sullivans Bay and we were quickly on the water by about 7am. Drifted the channel veerrrry slowly as there was no wind (but a good amount of rain to start off with) and the current wasn't particularly strong but we were both straight into the fish. We both had a couple of those sh...

Army Bay 9/12 & Tutukaka 9/12 & 10/12

Army Bay 9/12 am Blair, his flatmate Andrew and I drove to Army Bay in the earlyish hours of Saturday morning. Good to note that it is getting light very early. It was fully light by the time we were fishing. It was also the morning after my work Xmas party so I was feeling pretty dusty, although m...

Re: DAM Quick - any good?

There is no way that this combo could be made in Germany and sold here for $99. Probably the only German thing is the name. Rainbow Quite possibly, but I've been keeping an eye on this combo for a while because I knew I was going to need something extra for the yak and it's usually up around the $2...

Re: DAM Quick - any good?

My first (decent) reel that my Dad ever bought me was a DAM reel. It was basically one of the first lever drag models on the market some 15-20 years ago. And it was awesome. I loved it. It shat itself only a couple of years ago. Not sure how I got my father to spend that much money on me at that tim...

Nearly double skunked 17 and 18th Dec - NN

Much like the other Trip Report of the same name, I went out from Narrowneck on Saturday evening and threw back 3 snapper, and kept a KY. The KY was smaller than I thought when I got back to land. I guess I was just excited to catch something on this trip after a few quiet hours. Guess it'll be bait...

Re: The one that got away

That seems a really odd shape for a lure to be bent in. i.e. 3 bends, not 1. Would have loved to see what caused it and how!

Re: Mussel Farm - Matingarah

People need to try Parore. It's actually pretty good. White flesh, much like a normal snapper.

Nice work on the fishing too.

Northland Kayak Fishing Classic - 12 & 13 November 2016

Friday night Blair and I made our way up to Whangarei for the safety briefing with lots of anticipation about what the weekend would bring. After listening to the briefing and not signing in (what was the story here? was it sign posted?) we shot up to Matauri Bay next to the Cavalli Islands and sett...

Re: WTB: Viking Profish GT

Thanks piwikiwi. I've been following most of those but I think the time has now finally come where I need to actually buy a kayak... I made a deal with another forum member that if he caught a ten pounder off his yak, and he bought one of those kick arse chilly bins (techni ice - the consumer award ...
