Re: Modified Golden Eye or expensive firewood.

The final compete weight is in the high 20'skg's. I haven't weight it yet, so not 100% certain. I did glass both in and out, lots of filler, and resin, plus lots of first time mistakes, so it is heavier than it needs to be. I agree a target weight of 20 to 22kg's is very achievable with a little bit...

Re: Modified Golden Eye or expensive firewood.

Finally got out for an unsuccessful fish on Saturday. The great news is the kayak didn't sink, and the bad news is the fish weren't biting. Compared to my old plastic yak, the wooden one is so much faster I use to cruise at approx 5km's/ hour. I am now doing 7 to 8. Top peak speed on the old kayak w...

Re: CAT SOT build

Amazing work. Looks fantastic, and also learning heaps from this build.
And I keep on discovering all the thing I did wrong on my build.
It was never anything a few hours of sanding :swear: :swear: couldn't fix. :D :D :D
Keep the photos coming.

Re: Modified Golden Eye or expensive firewood.

The rudder lines are Dyneema line, not nylon. I will have to re-tie after the first few fishing trips to remove the stretch from the weave. After that they will be premo. I think downwind will be where I will really need to slow down, to keep up with others. During the quick launch paddle, whenever ...

Re: Glue it back together ...

we use a urethane adhesive to stick our hatch rubber seals onto the polyethylene. The process includes heating the Polyethylene with a hot air gun, or hair dryer, and this helps to burn off the surface oils. lay down a bead of urethane adhesive, and stick the two parts together. If there are any gap...

Re: Modified Golden Eye or expensive firewood.

Had the proper launching on Sunday evening - bubbles and everything "May she catch more fish than all of Phil's previous kayaks" Just a quick paddle and sail to see if everything worked, and how it felt. It looks like it could be wet punching into a big wind chop, and it's going to be a flyer downwi...

Re: Modified Golden Eye or expensive firewood.

It's a RTM rudder, and are available from Seahorse Kontiki's for $200. That includes the rudder, lines, and adjustable footplegs. One change I made was to use 1/4 inch nylon tube as the cable guides, and upgraded the lines to 3mm dynemma/spectra rope, which is non stretch. It is the same material as...
