Re: Bream Bay newbie

Hello from across the water (Parua Bay). Hainesy is the guy to talk to about fishing in that area. I fish around Ruakaka in the summer months and usually do well with pannies.

PDL looking damn good and congratulations on that fish :y: I'm guessing that wasn't a North Shore fish? :D

If you're anchoring on sand, have a look at the Cooper anchors. Well worth the money.

Re: Anyone been out lately

I think it’s hard going at the moment. Up here, water temperature has dropped several degrees in a matter of weeks. I’ve struggled to get a feed on my last two trips. Hate to say it, but the guys using bait do seem to do better at this time of year.

Re: FF battery showing 12.6 - 12.8 V

Seems OK in that respect. Doesn’t fall much lower than the voltage it starts out with, but I’m twitchy because my Humminbird does not cope with sudden power outage very well at all.

FF battery showing 12.6 - 12.8 V

My battery is showing 12.6 - 12.8 V when connected up to my Humminbird. It used to be around 13.5 V. It's a 12V, 12ah SLA. Time to replace it yet again?

Re: Introducing my new battleship old town PDL

I appreciate it's a lot of money for a fishing kayak, plus for those of us not built like Arnie, a trailer would be close to essential, but it's a drop in the ocean compared to buying/running a boat or jetski. WaterHornet - keep us updated on how you go with it :)

Re: Introducing my new battleship old town PDL

If I was going to buy another kayak, it would be the PDL, no contest. It may happen as my Mrs is talking about getting back in to kayaking as a family activity.

No, but neither are they a massive hindrance to getting back in the yak. I tried it.

Yes, Lovig kayak pants are the way to go. There’s a few threads about them.

Re: Thursday AHB

I went out on Thursday, caught three, 29 cm snapper and let 'em go. Beautiful day, 10 knot Southerly , about 6 C. When I got back to the shore, I couldn't feel my legs. Jeez Im getting old. When I was seventeen, I could sail a Laser all afternoon in the middle of winter, in a storm and in just a Ts...

Haha! I don't mind losing the big ones because I'm going to let them go anyway. DO mind losing the small ones because they're my dinner :D I even bought a landing net!

Re: Landing big fish - what do you use and why?

Gently pull to side of yak by leader/jig and grab tail. Never had a problem with big fish. It's the small ones that flap around and cause havoc :D

Great looking yaks. If I was looking for another kayak, the PDL would be my first choice. I would want a trailer for it though

Re: For the love of fish

All trout. I grew up eating them and loved it. After 5 years in Northland and a diet of snapper, john dory, bluenose, gurnard, scallops, crayfish etc, fresh cooked trout turns my stomach. I nearly puked last time I tired it

Gravad lax for trout. I won't post a recipe as I just Google it, but it makes the damn things edible :y:
