Re: Suitable leader strength for '80lb' braid?

I worry about snagging up with heavy gear on the yak as it might not be physically possible to break it. Sure you can cut the line, but I'd rather not leave metres of braid in the water, plus there is the cost aspect. You may stand a chance with 50lb leader, especially if your knots aren't up to muc...

Re: Fish finder set up fail????

Hi. If the screen is completely blank, it's probably the battery or a power lead connection. Check the fuse. I was tearing my hair out a little while ago with a similar problem. It turned out the inline fuse holder I had was a piece of crap. It very nearly wrote off the whole unit. Replaced it with ...

Wonder if 2500 is strong enough or if the spool is big enough if you "accidentally" hook a kingi?
No worries with kings to well over legal, but you have to take your time and play the fish.

Yeah, that's pretty sick! In another life, I had a large collection of hard body lures, most have been sold now. They certainly catch the angler, if not the fish.

Re: Stradic 4000 Combo

That's a bloody good deal! Just note that it would be ideal for heavier end of sofbating. Depending on what you want it for, it might be worth asking if you can downgrade the reel to a 2500 and the rod to the 3-6 kg version. The 2500/3-6kg is my got to go softbaiting outfit :y:

Re: Yak hard-body lure starter pack recommendations please.

Re: trials: I would concentrate on an area where you know there are fish on the bite. On my recent Dr Evil test, the spot I was fishing was giving me a fish, or at least a strike on every cast with soft baits beforehand. It’s never a scientific process, but it helps to remove as many variables as po...

Re: A cautionary tale

Once upon a time, I surfed a fully loaded fishing kayak on to the beach at Matapouri. It wasn’t part of the plan. Change of conditions. It was mid-summer and the beach was packed with tourists. I expected to be going for an embarrassing swim. I got that turtle feeling. Next thing I knew, the wave du...

Re: Trying to understand the unique advantages of yak fishing.

I can’t answer your questions, but 2500 size reels and 10/15lb braid catch most of my fish including 20lb snapper and legal kings in open water. It’s not a pissing contest, I just prefer lighter gear if I’m holding it all day.

Nice. The blue water around Whangarei was 21.5 and the horrible green stuff was 22.5!

Nice idea for a kayak fishing competition

Got this thought from a YouTube video. First one back to the beach with a single fish of a designated species (obviously legal size), wins plus second and third places. Adds a time and tactics element. Snapper would be the ideal for the North Island, but it could be whatever. Video: https://www.yout...

Re: Kayak wanted

I've caught up with the person in question. They are still looking, but have narrowed it down to models like the Scrambler or Espri. Based on what they want it for, I think this is reasonable. That TradeMe Scrambler would have been ideal, but they missed out.

Re: Yak hard-body lure starter pack recommendations please.

Dr Evil all the way (based on one trip!), better get to the gym and start working those muscles, or buy a motor  Seriously though, if you're after snapper, it's going to have to be a deep diver. I know that snapper can be caught all the way up to the surface, but in general, they are in the bo...

I warn newbie and visiting kayakers off Whangarei Harbour, especially the area around the harbour entrance. It is plain nasty at the wrong time, worse if wind against tide
