Re: Got me a trailer

Nice. I do think a trailer is the way to go, despite the associated hassle and cost.

Re: FS Old Town Predator XL With Outboard Mount

Everything will sell for a price, it just might not be the price you were hoping for. As you say, it is a specialised yak. It's big and would suit the bigger paddler. Unfortunately for you, the pedalos have taken off and probably fill quite a lot of this market. If it was me, I'd keep it rather than...

Re: Kayak Fishfinder - GPS - Sounder Recommendations

Hopefully the sign is big enough that you will still be over it when you come to a stop. As SitDown says, drop a slider down and boom! You're away (most of the time). Fish finders and vertical lure fishing techniques make fishing too easy :)

Re: Braid snapping

I've had some problems with Fireline. It's very thin (which made me buy it), but the knot strength just isn't there, not in my hands anyway.

Re: Braid snapping

Sounds like cheap or damaged braid. I regularly land legal kingfish and big snapper on 10lb braid in open water. I use Powerpro Superslick 8 or Suffix 832.

Re: AHB 4 October

Interesting report. I wondered if you were pulling our chain like FOM :D

I'm not particularly worried about bronzies, but having a tug of war with a fish that size in a kayak is probably not a very good idea!

Re: Live bait solutions

My tuppence, the Viking livebait pod system looks pretty good to me, but obviously only compatible with certain Viking models. Otherwise, I came to the conclusion that livebaiting from a kayak just isn't worth the effort. I tried all sorts of livebait storage devices and none were great, and that's ...

Re: Minimum Requirements Handheld VHF

I think it's a "how long is a bit of string" question. I would go for the best you can afford. I went cheap first time, and replaced it with a more expensive model a few years down the line because I didn't have confidence that it would work when needed.

Re: Wet suits

Just a heads up. Wetsuits aren’t great on a kayak. They’re designed to keep you warm under water, not above. Everyone’s needs are different when it comes to thermal protection. Most people seem to wear Sharkskin or similar, or dry pants/top with an insulating later underneath when it’s cold. Summer ...

Rob Fort has done some great videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGXI0FuC7kk

Personally, I would want a fish finder if I was going to try this.

Re: New guy looking to learn

Welcome. I would agree with the above, kayak choice is somewhat personal. Where in NZ are you? A location would help us give fishing advice. There's usually someone with local knowledge.

Fish species/techniques shouldn't be too different from what you know already, so you'll be straight in to it! :y:
