Re: Reload side scan - sounders install tips and ideas

Hi any one tried the railblaza transducer mount for elite 7 Ti transducer on the side. I think i saw someone with that setup from side holder. Keen to try that but dont know if it will work well or not I've done a mock up here at the Viking Factory and it certainly looks as though it will work, I h...

Re: Reload side scan - sounders install tips and ideas

... I'd say you have a pretty good solution there already, correct me if I'm wrong but with the Tackle Pod can't you pop/prop it up while you launch then drop it in proper once you are off the beach, then do the same when coming back in..? ... That's exactly how I'm using it on this new setup: have...

Re: Reload side scan - sounders install tips and ideas

What about a system that allows the transducer to be raised or lowered? Then it could be tucked up out of the way for launching and landings and lowered when in deeper water. That's part of our development program for future kayaks. Unfortunately the amount of re-tooling needed to try and introduce...

Re: Non-chafe base layer top?

Thanks both. I have had an adrenalin 2P top I was really happy with but I never thought to try it as a base layer. Have you tried the Adrenalin base layer thermo top? Looks like they have deliberately designed it to keep seams away from the underarm. https://www.kayakhq.co.nz/collections/adrenalin-...

Re: Non-chafe base layer top?

I've had similar issues but have been using Adrenaline 2P base layer tops for the last few years with excellent results. Have a look at: http://www.canoeandkayak.co.nz/shop/Clothing/Thermal+tops/2P+Thermo+Long+Sleeve+Top.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or http://www.northlandkaya...

Re: Reload side scan - sounders install tips and ideas

Having side scan on kayaks is about juggling compromises (as with most other accessories). For best performance the transducer needs to be deeply submerged (in kayak terms) to "see" below wavelets and associated small bubbles that create surface clutter, this ultimately limiting side imaging perform...

Re: Blue Mako F40 Profish vs Cobra Marauder

I'd like to make one comment that many may not be aware of: Raw polyethylene is affected by UV relatively rapidly. It gains minor protection from some types of colour pigments, but needs the addition of UV stabilisers to be suitable for outdoor use. Like sunscreens there are a multitude of grades (S...

Re: TAS Attack!

Regarding the hooks on the Dr Evil's: I've been running them for several years now and went from trebles to singles, and have gone back to trebles again. I found the single hooks I was using affected the action of the lure, as did not having the belly hook. Having gone back to two trebles I also had...

Re: With so many choices, why a kayak?

There are so many reasons, but having started using kayaks in the 70's to access remote back country hunting and fresh water fishing opportunities it became an addiction. This addiction aside, here are some of the key advantages that make it incredibly difficult to even contemplate small boat owners...

Re: Corrosion protection

There are many long life products that will work well - I've had good results from the likes of Viscotene, Lanocote, CRC Multilube, CRC Dielectric Grease etc. The key features are their tacky grease like nature that helps them stay in place when flushed with water, and their dielectric properties th...

Re: Battery charging?

It's an interesting problem: how expensive is an expensive charger? I've opted for a CTek. Since going to it I've not had to replace a battery despite my cycling them extremely deep on the large sounders I use. Previous to this I used a good quality budget charger (roughly $35-$40) and was getting a...

Re: navionics gold card

Be very VERY careful open files on a Navionics card on PC's, or saving other files to the Navionics card. The cards have hidden copyright protection files that if altered will render the charts unreadable. In such a situation Navionics are rather abrupt in telling you it's your fault and you have to...

Re: Battery charging?

Depends on the battery and charger: For my SLA batteries I use chargers that are designed specifically to remain connected so they can periodically condition check the battery and keep it in premium order. While they're more expensive to purchase initially they've greatly extended the life of my bat...

Re: Worm soft baits?

I haven't tried the Gulps, but did really well on Mr Twisters. I found I got best results with a Carolina style rig, twitching the rod tip to match the length of trace/leader to make the worm twitch into the puff of sand the sinker sucked up as it moved. Pause for 4-5 seconds then repeat. Strangely ...

Re: Gulp vs Z-man

I fish both with good results, but find I have to vary my technique between the two: Z-Man lures float and can benefit from going up slightly in jig head weight, especially in deep water. This can also be used to your advantage with a Carolina style rig over worm beds and has given me spectacular re...

I've blown a fuse connecting my fixed mount VHF with the polarity the wrong way round :headbang: - the fuse blew and saved the radio though :y: I've also done a new installation where the sounder power lead had a short in the plug moulding (despite the "factory tested" label). That gave me pause: wh...
