Re: Coromandel - best place to launch near hot water beach?

I launch at Whangamata sometimes. Always through the surf. It's fine up to about 1 metre, but anything more and it can get a bit dicey. If there's little to no swell when you are there you should be sweet, but yeah otherwise drive to some spots that are sheltered from the waves. Also, make sure you ...

I’ll admit, I was a tad envious as I went past you on the ferry. Well done mate.
Thanks, I hope I cut a sufficiently dashing figure, looking like a credit to the Kayaking community.

Re: Rangi channel or Army Bay?

Hey mate. Rangi channel has been producing pretty well the last few months. Check out the trip reports for Narrow Neck (NN), there's been some solid fish come in. There's a lot of traffic in that area, so you have to watch for that, and the current is decent, so it also pays to keep an eye on your d...

Re: Narrow Neck Post Storm - Sweet as Bro!

Nice haul! I also went out from Narrow Neck and got a piece of that action. Been out from there a few times with pretty good success, it's amazing how productive that channel is considering the pressure it gets. Launched around 630 and ended up paddling further over to Rangitoto to throw a bruised b...

Re: A cautionary tale

very hairy situation there ... glad everything is all ok. Makes me thinking to do some practice for surf landing as my usual go to beach are quite safe with almost no surf. Any safe-ish beach in north shore or rodney where we can have a good practice for this? Orewa would be a good place to practic...

Re: A cautionary tale

After having my arse handed to me in six inches of water in small surf, I'll be adopting the idea of, hanging on to the back, to keep the 'yak straight when coming in through surf. Better wet, than having to untangle all the leads and gear and so on, if the 'yak goes bum up. It's amazing how such s...

Re: A cautionary tale

So this time I tried to avoid catching any waves, paddling between sets.. however with a wave bearing down on me and not wanting to lose any of the gear capsizing.. I decided on jumping out of the yak and grabbing hold of the rear end rigging. The wave came through and with me at the back it kept t...

Re: Kayaks and Currents - Harbour Paddlers especially.

Damn, that's scary. While nothing quite at the scale of San Francisco, I watched a kayaker paddle frantically against the ebb tide at the entrance to Whangamata harbour over the weekend to make it back inside. It took them quite a long time, including a few breaks, to go about 300 metres and they in...

Re: Anyone catching?

Been out here and there since christmas but haven't been slaying it. Lots of small stuff. Have hit up a number of new (for me) places in Coromandel, Auckland and up Leigh ways. Most trips am coming back with one or two for the table but they have all been pretty slow days. I put that down to my inex...

Whoa that earth.nullschool.net is cool. Kinda like the windy app.

I also use predict wind, and windy, both as phone apps. I sometimes use windguru for the cams.

I also have a tendency to look at trees and see how much they are rustling. Not to mention the odd flag. :D
