Re: roof rack selection

I get my two yaks on top both at 45° using jbars. I only use front/back tie downs on longer road trips. That being said, I wished I’d opted straight for a kayak trailer! That’s next on the list, way easier and doesn’t ruin the paintwork of the car with salt! I have to say, I have gone through a sim...

Re: Softbait/Micro Jigging Reel

I can't argue against the Penn Conflict, since that's exactly what I just ordered. A 4000 size might be a little bit of overkill for the rod, IMO. I would probably go with a 3000. It's pretty amazing how much grunt is packed in small, good quality reels these days. The price of the Conflict range at...

Re: Chinese reels - Opinions? Experiences?

Well... in the end, ordered a Penn Conflict 4000. I am very happy with the quality of my Penn Slammer, so why not give this one a chance?

Couple blue cod and a few kahawai sound lime a fun day to me! I'm even a bit jealous.

Re: Chinese reels - Opinions? Experiences?

Thanks for the comments, guys. It pretty much what my gut is telling me. "When it sounds too good to be true, it usually IS too good to be true". I have had great luck with my Peen and Abu Garcia, not so much with the cheap stuff. Was just wondering if there were signs that the Chinese outfits had a...

Chinese reels - Opinions? Experiences?

Thinking about buying a new 4000 size reel sometime in the future, and there are a lot of chinese offerings from companies such as Seaknight, Kastking, etc. claiming that they are "waterproof" and "corrosion proof", etc. Of course, the prices seem quite attractive compared to the usual top brand nam...

Re: What kayaking gloves should I get?

Having used quite a few different gloves over the years for me the one glove that is a cut above all others is made by Sharkskin. They offer cut index, thumb and middle fingers for handling line/tackle etc so great for knot tying and full finger protection for the other fingers. This glove has the ...

Re: Life Jacket PFD

Really like my 2 year old NRS Chinook. Extremely comfortable, good storage. Haven't experienced any fraying or marked fading yet. It was a bit of a tossup between the Chinook and the NRS cVest, went with the Chinook.

Re: Warehouse fishing gear what's the go?

Just had a look at The Warehouse online store. They do have brand names, but only the budget models, which they sell at competitive prices. When saltwater kayak fishing, our gear is exposed to saltwater spray and splash and I kinda like to spend a bit more and get gear that will survive a bit longer.

Deeper Castable fishfinder

Hi everyone! Has anyone tried the Deeper castable fishfinders? Looks interesting, as it can make use of our existing electronics such as tablet and/or smartphone. Also like the idea od using it from river/lake shore to prospect fishy looking areas. Any input, comments, would be appreciated. https://...

Re: thickness of anchor rope?

I switched from poly to Paracord. It's around 3mm thick, very pliable, lays very nicely on the winder, and very soft on the hands. I also carry a Paracord "donut", on me, which is a very handy way to carry 30 m of tangle-free cordage. When needed, all I need to do is unlock the half hitch securing t...

Kakanui paddle with Hector's Dolphins

Kakanui dolphin 2.jpg Last Saturday, forecast was for flat seas, so decided to explore a new place Just South of Oamaru. Driving along Beach Road, I stumbled on Kakanui, and decided to investigate this gorgeous beach and the nearby rocks. Launched off the nice sandy beach and paddling out to go aro...

Re: Kayak trolley

I was also tempted by those, but was a bit suspicious, so after also trying the folding trolley we got with our recreational kayaks on my Reload, I decided to go nuts and buy the C-Tug. Really glad I did. Worth every penny!

Anyone kayak fishing in Canterbury?

Hi. Bought a Viking Reload during the winter and would be interested in meeting other kayak fishos in the area. Really interested in finding good accessible areas from the Timaru area outwards. Thinking of heading to the Oamaru-Dunedin area for some Blue Cod at some point.
