Re: SAROP underway at Cavallis - Drifting kayak

This incident is why some regions want kayak owners to write a contact name and phone number on or in the kayak. My suggestion is to do it in a very obvious place plus a hidden place. The first, if it accidentally goes missing, and the second, in case it is removed by someone else and you then have ...

Man drowns near Whangarei after falling out of kayak

Anyone got any more details than there are in the newspapers? 11 August 2018 " A man in his 50s has drowned after falling off his kayak near Whāngarei at about 5pm this evening." "A police spokesperson said he was seen struggling in the water in Tutukaka, east of Whāngarei, and raised a distress fla...

Re: Bloody sore bum

Any way to improve this? Or am i buggered? I can't see what type of kayak you have. However, the use of closed cell foam blocks, shaped and strapped in is a start. Not polystyrene foam, the flexible or semi flexible foams similar to camping sleeping mats. Our kayaks, being sea kayaks and plywood, h...

Re: Bloody sore bum

Try adding more support between the legs rather than the outside of the legs. Also as much length of leg support as possible.

How much length of leg supported by your chair in front of the TV or your car seat?

Sometimes I read a post and want to just give a like or a thumbs up - I can't always be bothered writing an actual reply.

Re: PLB saves Northland kayaker

It's asking for trouble doing a trip like this by yourself. Tell that to Paul Caffyn, North and South Islands and then he did Japan, Australia, Alaska, all solo. Tell that to that young kid Tara Mulvany who did most of the South Island solo (in winter) and the North Island all solo. A lot of people...

Kayaker rescued for a second time https://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/kayaker-rescued-second-time "It is not the first time he has called on rescue services in the pursuit of his dream to kayak around New Zealand." "In August last year, police helped him ashore after he was unable to get back in his...

Re: Flags- laws/by-laws or just good practice?

Note my bit about black being the most visible - under certain circumstances. I did see that, but was curious what the 'certain circumstances' were. A black ship (or any very dark colour) on the horizon versus a light grey one. We are seeing something against a light background in this case. Lookin...

I believe they find light blue very visible from aircraft!

Re: Flags- laws/by-laws or just good practice?

There is mention of the Auckland Regional Council Navigation Safety Bylaw 2008 on the KASK website. This is what is there plus comments, which might be worth considering. ARC Bylaw ~ Visibility of kayaks and paddle craft Effective from 1 July 2008 Clause 2.17 Auckland Regional Council Navigation Saf...

Re: Flags- laws/by-laws or just good practice?

This might or might not help. Note using the brass deck fitting as the plastic equivalent is not strong enough (one at the bottom of Queen Charlotte Sound) and fit a float (same reason).

The lower surface to the front. As shown in the picture, and if an aircraft wing, the aircraft would be flying inverted.

Re: Greenland Paddle

To confirm what HLD and probably others would already have known. I got the darn GP3.1 around backwards. From your description I'm confused. Sitting with the paddle in the water, the humped surface of the paddle should be towards the bow of the kayak. The flat face of the paddle aft. Then. like the...

Re: Speed bumps are fighting back

A decade or so back, paddling back to Havelock, out of the channel close to the madflats, a fizz boat coming my way veered towards me and "buzzed" me. Just after that a large (70'?) launch came past in the same direction I was going (von Kohorn's motor-yacht). He crawled past, well clear, barely doi...

Re: Greenland Paddle

GP and not GP A couple of days ago, a school using the local 2 wakas (catamaran style) was paddling near us so I went over for a look. At 5 knots (at the power output I was producing and from a yacht timing me a few months before) they could just keep up but that was mainly due to their paddlers as ...

Re: Greenland Paddle

Go for the KASK laminated version. Thank you, vindicated. There is a slightly extended version on my website and a link to it on the KASK site. I sell the first paddle from each batch Gives me an idea of what to charge if I do the same. So it sounds like encouraging a lot of new GP users. Plus, you...

Re: Greenland Paddle

Good for you. If you get the chance, after a few outings could you try your euro paddle again and see how that now feels? I'm just wondering if yours will be like my experience and it felt so ugly that I gave up after about 100m. I'd also like to hear the result. Maybe haggle over whether 80 metres...

Wood all the way :y:
Definitely yes, I've always paddled my wooden kayaks with wooden paddles - for the last 4 decades.
