Re: Safety First

PFD Flag Drouge Buddy (until you get some confidence) Learning to self rescue - consider a kayak course leashes for all of the gear you do not want to lose. (Murphy's law really comes into play here) Drybag (especially if you have a 'bleeper' for the car) 2 means of calling for help. Cell phone in t...

Re: camping

Urapukapuka in the Bay of Islands. Probably a bit busy at the moment. An easy paddle from Rawhiti. There is a DOC campground, with a tap, decent loos and a cold water shower. Cars can be left at the Rawhiti marae/campground for a small fee. Mr C and I have paddled out there a few times. Moreporks to...

Re: Dud VHF Charger?

You are welcome to try my charger as well if you want. I had identical issues - swollen battery pack, light comes on then fades. Battery discarded - apparently an explosion risk when they are that swollen.

Shame as it was a good little radio.

Re: VHF radio on special by Marine Deals?

Uniden still sell them. Burnsco can get them, presumably anyone else who sells Uniden gear. I just picked up a new battery for my Voyager. It turns out the battery wasn't the whole problem, and I still can't get it to go. If I can't fix the radio you are welcome to the new battery. Should know in a...

Re: VHF radio on special by Marine Deals?

Discussing Uniden Voyagers Does anyone have an battery for a uniden that is surplus to requirements? Just discovered that the battery on mine has corroded to the "potential for explosion" point. So am eyeing up either a new unit, or scrounging a battery. Costs almost as much as a new unit to get a n...

Nice fish!! The Paihia bomb recipe has changed a few times over the years.....I'm not sure what is currently in them. As another pharmacist on the forum who gets terribly sea sick.....more time on the water...paddling or watching the horizon...(not the rod tip)...helps in the longer term. If you nee...

Terakihi in chilli lime dressing

Got hold of Annabel Langbein's book "eat Fresh" Just adapted her "spicy prawn and glass noodle salad" to accommodate terakihi and a low-carb diet :) Marinate the fish/prawns in some chilli lime sauce. While it is marinating, make a salad with lots of mint, basil and coriander (more herbs than lettuc...

Interesting that one definition of Celebre is "an issue causing widespread controversy or debate" I didn't know that  Given that my department at Uni is starting some metabolic work - many of us are low carbing. I've lost 5kg since christmas. But I'm not pushing the low carb bandwagon.....

Vegetable oils may not be as healthy as thought........

Study released today that re-examines old lost (?buried) data from the 70s that should that cutting out saturated fats and increasing vegetable oils (specifically an omega-6 polyunsaturated) rich oil didn't make any benefits for a bunch of men recovering from a heart attack. http://www.nzherald.co.n...
