Mid winter madness

I can't help but think that us Hawkes Bay Kayak Fishers need a crazy mid winter event to look forward to. I have organised a couple of events in past seasons , with a mixed attendance, so if theres enough interest I think we should renew old aquaintances, and get something going. This forum has been...

Re: Gisborne?

I used to live in Gissy , but at that time I only used to surf cast , and do the odd trip out in a tinnie with a mate . Much of the town has changed , especially the waterfront area but no doubt the sea has remained itself. If you want to launch a kayak I would say the harbour channel is the best be...

Re: 17 /18th Feb

I have had the last 2 days off , and fished out of the port both mornings . Thursday was a good day. About 15 large Jack Mackerel, a good sized gurnard , and a snapper, who had swallowed the hook, and would not have survived my surgery. He was 25cm. I berleyed , and used anchovies as bait . A good d...

Re: This weekend!

Sorry I couldn't join you . Visitors . But all good , We dined at Pipi Cafe , ( where I had fish . good too !) Saturday we had lunch at Clearview Winery , and that too was very nice . All pretty spendy , but I can't say I would rather be fishing, well not in this heat anyway. I've been eyeing up Ton...

Re: Cheap Knife Sharpening Guide

I use a Lansky set up with the stones & the little jig . I ran out of the oil , and used some 3: 1 oil but that wasn't so good . I now use rice bran oil with a couple of drops of diesel in it . Theres reason for this mad scientist approach. You sharpen the knives, and I use a 20 degree angle on my u...

Bixpy Jet motors.

I noticed a review of these jet motors in the NZ Fishing mag by Stephen Tapp ,aka Limitless on this site . They look impressive but I couldn't figure out a price for these little beauties, Anyone?

Re: Pilchards versus Anchovies

I see you live ,or fish in Golden bay , I live and Fish in Hawkes Bay . I'm sure the fishing is hugely different, but I have got a source of free anchovies . Not wanting to turn down this wonderful source of bait , I have switched to Anchovies from pillies . They are smaller , so using them whole is...

Porangahau

I had the rare chance of a weekend off ,& my wife was away. Brilliant. I chose to have a nosey round Central Hawkes Bay. The camping options on Pourere meant paying a $35 fee ,and registering with the council, no freedom camping. Porongahau on the other hand boasts both a motor camp, and freedom cam...

Re: roof rack selection

I've got an ultra 4.1 prowler , Good little yak , & I went 4.1, mostly so it would handle better OFF the water. Even so I have evolved away from chucking it up on my van roof, and unless I travel long hauls ( Napier/ Auckland.) I don't use a roof rack. When I do I always secure the yak front & back ...

Re: November 25/26

You should be hitting the water as I type this! Tight lines! I'm working , but managed a good session on my day off on Thursday. Chose to hit the Port as I usually do & I had a new rod & reel combo to blood. I smashed into a heap of KY , at one point I had 3 large fish on at once, on 2 rods ! I only...

A new weapon, a new season.

So there comes a time in a mans life when he needs to consider his position in the world. This is an awkward time ,and it's repetative to some extent. Let me explain ; When you turn 18, you become a legal adult , and therefore responsible for your own actions . ( OOPS!), so in my experience the best...

Re: Sunday September

I took a fairly relaxed approach to the morning ,with high tide at about 9.30am , so I was pleasantly surprised to see a good muster of kayaks , and possibly a new person to the group.
Didn't make the fishing any better ,but good haul there Rex , on what was a pleasant morning!

Workups

All this week there have been workups along the Marine Parade. Beginning Monday the fish have come in close and at times large pods of dolphins have been feeding as well. I would have thought the KY would be full of whitebait but surprisingly that hasn't been the case . Most of the fish Ive got have...

Port

Sneaked out to the outermost green bouy early this morning . What a blast ! Conditions were perfect. I hooked 3 large KY but only managed to boat one ! This prompted a gear overhaul afternoon , with particular attention to terminal tackle and I replaced pretty much all my hooks. Gave all the reels a...

Re: Mahia this weekend Interest?

Pretty good result there Blair , I myself fished Whirinaki, on the surfcaster but came up empty handed . I was using prawns & mussels , hoping for the sort of Rig that you scored ! I like the Tangoio area ,and I'm keen to fish it more over the coming season . I had a discussion with someone at work ...
